Course on mixed housing projects

Picture of researchers

Mixed housing seems to offer a good solution for various housing issues and for a 'soft landing' in a neighbourhood of residents who (temporarily) need support. The housing projects involved are home to different groups who deliberately live together within an organized context. They maintain contact with each other and often undertake joint activities. At its core, it's about people who want to be a 'good neighbour' to each other.

Objective

What works and what doesn’t work around Mixed Living? For those who want to delve deeper into what is important when preparing, starting and continuing mixed housing projects, the Mixed Housing Course has been in existence since 2018. The participants work for municipalities, housing corporations, care and shelter providers or welfare organizations, among others. They have or will have a managerial, policy-related or executive role in the housing projects. Social entrepreneurs or active residents also sometimes participate.

Results

The course leads to a broad and practice-oriented vision of mixed housing. The course offers a combination of theoretical insights, practical examples of mixed housing projects and personal development. There is an opportunity to work together on new mixed-use housing projects or on improving existing projects.

Duration

01 September 2018 - 31 December 2030

Approach

The course consists of five days at or in the vicinity of mixed housing locations. The content of the programme is thematic. Participants are getting to know a mixed housing project better through a guided tour, conversations with professionals and sometimes through stories from residents. There are guest contributions from experts. During the meetings there is an opportunity to learn from each other in working groups and to reflect and work on personal learning goals.

Impact

In the Course, the participants work together on policy and practice of mixed housing projects. In the meantime, about 170 professionals from different fields have followed the course. Many of them have been able to use the knowledge gained in the development of their own mixed housing projects or in their involvement work as, for example, (individual) supervisor, community builder, social manager or housing consultant.

Collaboration with knowledge partners

Since 2018, the national course has been organised by the 't Groene Sticht foundation (one of the oldest mixed housing projects in the Netherlands), Utrecht University of Applied Sciences, social housing corporation Portaal, and social care and support organisation De Tussenvoorziening, in collaboration with other organisations, including social housing corporation Woonin and social care and support organisation HvO-Querido.
