Local Media for Democracy - news deserts in Europe

The existence of a vibrant and independent local media ecosystem that serves the public interest of its local communities is a cornerstone for our democratic societies. Today, however, the very existence of local, regional and community media has become uncertain in many areas of the European Union. This study analysis the state of local journalism in all EU countries. 

Objective

The project has the objective to improve the knowledge base of the regional, local and community news media in the EU

Results

This research reports about the state of local journalism in Europe. Additionally, each country publishes a separate country report.

Duration

01 January 2023 - 01 January 2024

Approach

Through desk research and interviews, research is conducted in all 27 EU countries on 55 indicators. The following topics are covered: the market of local, regional, and community media, financing, independence, social inclusivity, and the safety of local journalists.
