Pieter Schilder

Researcher

Pieter Schilder has been associated with the Research group Research Competence since 2015. His aim is to arrive at ‘actionable knowledge’: i.e. knowledge that can help the professional to take action within real-life situations. Pieter strives to develop a new perspective on the tension between practical relevance and methodological thoroughness.

Pieter has a broad horizon as a researcher. After earning a Civil Engineering degree from the Institute of Technology, he went on to pursue a master’s degree in Culture, Organisation & Management. After this, he worked for a number of years as a freelance trainer. In 2007, he joined the team of HU University of Applied Sciences – first as a communication trainer for the Media Technology programme; later as a Business Administration lecturer. Pieter fulfils a number of other roles within the HU besides – including graduation coordinator and project leader for the redesign programme.

In these roles, Pieter regularly encounters the gap between education and practice, as well as the question which requirements need to be met by students’ research at the time of graduation. He focuses on how high the bar has to be set for graduating students and which role the candidate’s investigative capacity plays in this context.
