COPE: Communication Optimization through Participation Experiences

Children and adolescents with communication problems may experience barriers in daily life situations, so called communicative participation. It is valuable to measure communicative participation in an easy and reliable manner. Doing so enables the speech-language therapist and the client to formulate relevant treatment goals and evaluate them.

Objective

The purpose of this project is to develop an accessible communicative participation item bank (CPIB) for children and adolescents, that is able to measure communicative participation. The second purpose is to develop a method to formulate treatment goals regarding communicative participation.

Results

The products will contribute to person-centred care in speech and language therapy. Measuring communicative participation will provide input for shared decision-making about participation goals.

Duration

01 October 2021 - 01 October 2025

"The project is patient-centred, because the problems of the patient act as a starting point for improvement of therapy."

Approach

The project has a mixed-methods design. The communicative participation item bank and the person specific goal setting method will be created using a qualitative approach and co-creation. A quantitative approach is used to validate the CPIB.
