Esther van Eijk is member of the research group Access to Justice. Her interests and expertise focus on the intersection of law, society and migration, and its impact on the lives of individuals in the Middle East and migrants in Europe.
Esther completed degrees in International law and Arabic, before obtaining a PhD on Syrian family law (Leiden University 2013), based on ethnographic fieldwork in Damascus. In Maastricht her postdoctoral research focused on religious marriage and divorce practices in a transnational context. As an independent researcher/consultant she worked primarily on civil documentation and missing persons in the Middle East.
