Master's degrees: Applied Sciences vs Research Universities
In the Netherlands, higher education is offered at 2 types of institutions: research universities - known as 'universiteit' in Dutch - and universities of applied sciences - known as 'hogeschool' in Dutch. We are a university of applied sciences.
A Master's degree from a university of applied sciences is equivalent in level to one from a research university. The main difference lies in the focus of the master's programmes:
- Professional Master's (Applied Sciences): emphasises practical application and often involves practical oriented and real-life cases.
- Academic Master's (Research Universities): focuses more on theoretical and scientific research.
Graduating from your master's programme
All master's programmes conclude with research thesis. At a university of applied sciences, you'll apply your research question in a practical setting. In, for example, a real-life case at a work setting. The focus of a thesis at a research university is more theoretically-based. Upon successful completion of your research, you'll graduate and receive your internationally recognised Master's degree.
