Numeracy and debt - searching for relations

In our daily lives we regularly encounter numbers, especially in a financial context. To deal with these numbers in a good way, numeracy is necessary. This PhD research aims to understand the relations between numeracy and debt.

Objective

This research addresses the question: Which aspects of numeracy, as described in the Common European Numeracy Framework, which include knowledge and skills as well as having a positive attitude towards numbers and higher order skills, are related to having financial problems? The objective is to gain a better understanding of why people run into debt, and thereby also of how to prevent this.

Results

  • Literature review: overview of the state-of-the-art knowledge on this topic
  • Interviews: better picture of how numeracy is experienced by people with debt
  • Focus group discussions: Deeper understanding of gained insights

Duration

01 February 2023 - 31 January 2027

Approach

We investigate this question through a combination of a literature review, interviews, and focus group discussions. First the literature review will be completed. The gained knowledge will be tested and complemented through the interviews. The focus group discussions will deepen the gained knowledge, by adding the perspective of debt counselors.
